Stanton and Anthony were close friends, partners, and allies, but judging from their backgrounds they would seem an unlikely pair. Stanton was born into the prominent Livingston clan in New York, grew up wealthy, educated, and sociable, married and had a large family of her own. Anthony, raised in a devout Quaker environment, worked to support herself her whole life, elected to remain single, and devoted herself to progressive causes, initially Temperance, then Abolition. They were nearly total opposites in their personalities and attributes, yet complemented each other's strengths perfectly. Stanton was a gifted writer and radical thinker, full of fervor and radical ideas but pinned down by her reponsibilities as wife and mother, while Anthony, a tireless and single-minded tactician, was eager for action, undaunted by the terrible difficulties she faced. As Stanton put it, "I forged the thunderbolts, she fired them."

The relationship between these two extraordinary women and its effect on the development of the suffrage movement are richly depicted by Ward and Burns, and in the accompanying essays by Ellen Carol Dubois, Ann D. Gordon, and Martha Saxton. We also see Stanton and Anthony's interactions with major figures of the time, from Frederick Douglass and John Brown to Lucretia Mott and Victoria Woodhull. Enhanced by a wonderful array of black-and-white and color illustrations, Not For Ourselves Alone is a vivid and inspiring portrait of two of the most fascinating, and important, characters in American history.

In 1902, at the age of 83, Susan B. Anthony wrote a letter to her dearest friend, Elizabeth Cady Stanton:

We little dreamed when we began this contest, optimistic with the hope and buoyancy of youth, that half a century later we would be compelled to leave the finish of the battle to another generation of women. But our hearts are filled with joy to know that they enter upon this task equipped with a college education, with business experience, with the fully admitted right to speak in public--all of which were denied to women fifty years ago. They have practically but one point to gain--the suffrage; we had all.

Anthony and Stanton had worked together for over half a century for women's rights and were instrumental in keeping the movement alive despite repeated defeats. Sadly, Anthony is best remembered as "the woman on that funny dollar" and Stanton has been largely forgotten. PBS favorites Ken Burns and Geoffrey C. Ward have joined forces again to change all that, in their respectful dual biography of the great suffragettes, Not for Ourselves Alone. The authors trace Anthony and Stanton's very different lives--Anthony was a Quaker who remained single all her life; Stanton was born to a wealthy family and later married and raised several children--from girlhood on through their hard work, frequent disagreements on policy, and unflagging devotion to the cause of women's rights. In this era when fewer than half the eligible voters go to the polls, many have forgotten the struggles of Anthony and Stanton, the sacrifices they made, and the hardships they endured. Anthony, for one, was frequently vilified in the press, cruelly caricatured, and shouted down at lectures. A fine short history

A fine short history of "two wonderfully different and equally brilliant women". If, after the three-hour film shown on public television, you still look blank when people mention Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, this companion volume is the book for you. Six chapters, lavishly illustrated and interspersed with short essays, two of their speeches and a discussion of their treatment in history, trace the fifty-year personal and political alliance between two women who spearheaded American women's first great effort to achieve equal rights. Often ridiculed and slandered in life and ignored by historians after death, Anthony and Stanton, wherever they are, should welcome this balanced and detailed account of their interwoven lives and works, often given in their own words. Discussion of their faults and mistakes, as well as their virtues and successes, gives depth to the picture. Because the two friends were so important to the women's movement (and its drive for the vote), the book also offers snapshots of other women who should be better known to Americans, such as the Grimké sisters, Sojourner Truth, Lucretia Mott, Lucy Stone, Frances Willard and Ida B. Wells-Barnett. Working together and apart, Anthony and Stanton set endless happy convocations of the sons of Adam by the ears and made arguments that no one could answer. This book is a brief account of how they did it. (Readers who want a bigger meal can find a useful menu in the bibliography.)

This book is richly woven with details that dive into the true characters of these two beautiful souls. The book gives a truly amazing account of not only Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony, but dives into their lives and characters. The reader obtains a true understanding of these women's motivations, techniques, skills, and contributions, in a brilliant biography with great quotes, accounts, photographs, and special archives directly from the time period of Susan & Elizabeth, relating to their work. Ken Burns & Geoffrey C. Ward have made quite an accomplishment with this extraordinary account.

Wonderful recounting of many important women

This book fills a glaring need in history books. Not many people know more about Susan B. Anthony than she was one the dollar coin. This book corrects that oversight, and then some. Not only does the book give a balanced and well thought out look at Anthony and Stanton, the reader is also introduced to many, many other women who worked so hard for women rights.
I especially liked that the book didn't shy away from some of these women's more controversial stands, such as taking on the black person's cause.
All in all, a very good book.

The book grows with age (your age).

I tried to read this book in my 20's; the book fell from my hands. I tried again at 40. The book didn't exactly fall from my hands, but my eyelids kept closing. Now I am 70. The book is so close to my heart that I can barely put it down. I am healthy and not (I hope) near death, but in this reflection on life from a man nearing death, life and its joys and sadnesses stand out more vividly than in any other book I have ever read.

From page 13: "...the flesh itself, that amazing instrument of muscles, blood, and skin, that red-tinged cloud whose lightning is the soul." Has there ever been a better description of the loved one's body?

Perhaps a Masterpiece

For several years now, I had seen repeated references to this novel as being superbly written, with a masterful translation from the French, reaching such a level of excellence as to merit the much overworked designation of "masterpiece." Needless to say, I was a bit skeptical of all this hoopla. When I finally got around to reading the book, on long flights to and from Denver, I needed only to read the first two pages to discover how remarkable this book is. The writing is so absolutely gorgeous and rich, that the reader is immediately captivated. Even those with little background or interest in Roman imperial history (and here we are dealing with the first and second centuries A.D.) will become engrossed in some of the finest prose I have ever read in a novel. After a while, you almost begin to believe that Hadrian actually wrote these "memoirs," so skillfully does the author hypothesize the inner thoughts and feelings of the emperor. I immediately became curious about the author (1903-1987) and how she came to write such a remarkable story. Fortunately, this paperback edition contains a section designated as "Reflections on the Composition" in which the author recounts her travails in writing the novel, her research, and the actual drafting. Also included is an extensive historical bibliography and some wonderful photographic illustrations drawn from Roman coins, sculpture, tombs, and other sources which add immeasurably to the text. A joyful and thrilling read, emoting a wonderous experience in which all readers can join.

Work of profound scholarship

Seldom do we find a historical novel written with both so much scholarship and passion. Marguerite Yourcenar not only incarnates the soul and spirit of Emperor Hadrian but of his time as well (second century A.D.). Narrated in the first person, it is the written meditations of a sick man who holds audience with his memories. Suffering from gout, knowing that his remaining days are few, Hadrian leaves a testimony of his life, his accomplishments, his philosophical outlook on life, and some pieces of good advise for his successor Marcus Aurelius. Hadrian was an architect of peace as well as buildings, he felt responsible for sustaining and increasing the beauty of his world, and his duties forced him "to serve as the incarnation of Providence," to the point that he felt he was indeed divine. A lover of the arts, of Greek culture, of the occult, he was above all a pragmatic man whose motto was "Strength, Justice and the Muses." For him life was "like a horse to whose motions one yields, but only after having trained the animal to the utmost." His positive attitude in every life experience allows him to look back as a man fully satisfied... except in matters of love! His passion and tragic death of young Antinous reminds him that "love's play is the only one which threatens to unsettle the soul."
It is history and story written with superb craftsmanship, the end result of painful and laborious 15 years of work and research. It is a psychlogically penetrating portrait of an outstanding figure in history; a man who was able to capture the spirit of his time, which in turn has been recaptured by the genious of Marguerite Yourcenar.

Moral equivalences are this novel's subtext. East Germans, it seems, are special because they subscribe to the opinion "that the common good should take precedence over profit." Never in the course of the book does anyone seriously counter its heroine's views. When Wolf tells a friend in Zurich that she has no memory whatsoever of her Stasi role, he reminds her of what Freud taught us about the conscious mind's ability to repress events too painful to contemplate. As a novel, City of Angels should not, of course, be judged for its adherence to fact. But from a literary standpoint, the book displays a curious inconsistency, a disconnect between its lovingly particularized images of LA life and its more abstract political and ethical generalizations. Interesting ideas, not really a novel

Ms. Wolf was apparently invited to attend a workshop in LA just when the GDR was dissolved. She has left us her impressions of Los Angeles, the US and the 'culture' we have now; the loss of faith she and her friends experienced post-GDR, and the way Westerners and the US reacted to the post-Wall and post-USSR era, as though the reunification were an unmitigated triumph, forgetting about the sense of loss and diminution this evoked in the GDR. This isn't a novel in the sense of inventiveness or dramatic arc, but a series of stories within stories about Wolf and some other emigres (Germans who came to LA in the '30s and '40s), other Europeans in LA. The book shows how people cope psychologically with the loss of their homeland, and incidentally, the loss of belief in a Marxist ideal or notion, not just when the GDR fell, but during the years Stalin destroyed those ideals.

A subtle and generous book

With a too casual scan the book can be easily dismissed as a random sorting of journal entries. An aging writer enjoying a change of pace and place has been writing a bit to justify an honor as a visiting artist.

Looking more closely, this narrative is artfully shaped, a true novel, which describes the late in life reckoning of the narrator with her past. Delightfully she is not captured by the past; this is not another rumination on Germany or Communism. It is primarily about encounters with friends and their adventures together. The past is faced and filtered and searched out through the quests and learning of the present. So many descriptions are bright, vivid and playful. The reader comes to care about a remarkable character who bears such a close resemblance to the author.

'City of Angels', start the book, stay with it. It's a quiet classic.

Yes, she lived in her time!

Wolf's masterpiece doesn't fail. She responds to critics politically, professionally, and personally, in the manner only she can with such aplomb, deliberation, and thoughtfulness; one marvels at her uniqueness and greatness. She lived in her time (Leben wir wirklich in dieser Zeit?) and showed how one could be human (Mensch). The challenge remains for us all to become humane; thank goodness Wolf helps assist with coming to oneself. Vielen herzlichen dank, Christa Wolf! Your writings, fortunately, live on!

About the Author

August Kleinzahler was born in Jersey City in 1949. He is the author of ten books of poems and a memoir, Cutty, One Rock. His most recent book of poetry, The Strange Hours Travelers Keep, was awarded the 2004 Griffin Poetry Prize. He lives in San Francisco.

Kleinzahler Writes Fine Poems

I discovered August Kleinzahler when I became intrigued by an article based on an interview with him in the New York Times a couple of years ago, and then read a poem on-line that made me draw in my breath because he'd described an experience so precisely that I recognized everything about it. I immediately ordered Green Sees Things In Waves, a book that pleased me no end, and now I have ordered and received Sleeping It Off in Rapid City--a beautiful book physically, and one which is also a volume of truly excellent poems. Some of my favourites so far (I'm just finishing Section I) are "Shoot The Freak" and "A Valentine: Regarding the Impracticability of Our Love." In addition to his magical way with words and images, I love the way Kleinzahler keeps the quotidian with him when he writes: it is everywhere in his poems, not crushing his work, but rather informing it. Or, to be more precise, it is as though he brings popular culture and day-to-day events up against larger issues, thereby revealing everything in a new way.

Take the genius of "I went to see McCarthy," in which the narrator lifts off by plane from a sere mid-west America to revisit "old arguments" in Ireland. He leaves behind "a parched bare land of yellow ochre" and enters Ireland ("swaddled in cloud, all grey and green"). The poem reveals McCarthy's town and his country in the way one might buff a brass image--going over the same area until its shape is gradually made bare and deeply shining. Through echoed images and repeated phrases, still trailing bits of the flat and dry Midwest behind us, we gradually enter the green land, its past and its way of telling stories--gradually enter until we are totally immersed in green. In green and green--learning as we go about the heroic battles that are required to come up with a good pat of Skibbereen butter, and that if something sounds good when you say it once, you might as well say it twice.

So I will: Kleinzahler writes fine poems.

If you love poetry, get this book. Kleinzahler is the real deal. If you are tired of the slam poetry culture or the "Everyone is an artist" aspect of American pop culture, you will love Kleinzahler. He has the essential quality of all good poets: he is in love with words, drunk with them. If you are tired of the poetry slam "Everyone is an artist" mediocrity of so much American culture today, you will love Kleinzahler.
This is poetry to be relished, read aloud, read to people you love. Such a joy to read him. Believe it or not, there are poets who have an ear, understand how words can sing, and actually can count syllables, can rhyme, and have read poetry that is more than 10 years old.

A Good Voice here and there

I would like to say that there is something fresh and new in these poems. For the most part they are nicely tuned pieces that can possess a startling and unexpected image here and there that brings you out of the expectaions in the modernist voice. Billy Collins offers a more authentic sensibility and Charles Simic has a better ear. Kleinzahler should be read. Some of his evocations of nature. Specifically color in nature are arresting.

Randall Jarrell, born in 1914 in Nashville, Tennessee, was a prolific poet, critic, and translator. At point one point, he served as Poet Laureate. His Complete Poems are available from FSG. He died in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1965.

Peter Sís is an internationally acclaimed artist and five-time winner of the New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year Award. He is the author of Starry Mesenger, Madlenka's Dog, Three Golden Keys, Galileo Galilei and Tibet: Through the Red Box.

so far the only translation I like

I first became acquainted to this translation by it's appearance in a song, "Early Sleep" by Nancy Elizabeth. I've tried reading multiple translations of Faust and so far this has been the only one to stick. Randall Jarrell doesn't bother with rhyming schemes. The dialog comes off much more earnest as a result. The writing is modern, yet by the same token, timeless. It easily draws home the commonalities that exist between Goethe's time and ours. Characters in the book might as well be the people you meet of the streets today, and it's no surprise I find them so much easier to relate to. My only disappointment is that I can't find anything written by the translator besides part 1. I don't believe Randall Jarrell ever completed his works.

An Excellent Collection

As a person of Irish descent, I am especially proud of Seamus Heaney's contribution to poetry and literature study. His voice is uniquely Northern Irish, but his understanding of that which makes language and literature deep spans the world--its ages and cultures. With a poet's vision, Heaney latches onto the resonance of words and images that explicate the human experience, in Icelandic sagas, Dante's verse, Milosz, or fellow Irish writers.
Heaney's aim in this collection of prose writings (some have been previously published and some are lectures) is to "celebrate and take possession" of poetry's excitement and exuberance. Each piece is autobiographical, in that his approach is not strictly the performance of formal literary criticism, but is rather the creative sojourn a poet can take into the depths of his own craft, to call the poetic spirit home. As he says, his central preoccupations are: How should a poet properly live and write? What is his relationship to be to his own voice, his own place, his literary heritage and his contemporary world?
Heaney's leading article is "Mossbawn," which describes the County Derry in the 1940's--as an 'omphalos' or navel which marks the center of the world--whereby one gets the sense that Heaney is a young Stephen Dedalus attempting to locate himself in Ireland, his community, and the world at large. His sentences are rich and carefully worded to evoke just the proper provincial image. He talks about his first forays in reading literature, rhymes, and the formidable Byron and Keats.
The next piece, "from Feeling Into Words" talks about the craft of writing poetry--his "Digging"--lines from Wordsworth. The next articles in Section I are interesting and special--on T.S. Eliot, living in Belfast and No. Ireland, being an Irish student and writer who writes in an English language.
Section two engages various interests: English writers and poets, Yeats, No. Irish poets and poetry, Kavanagh, P. Larkin, Dante and modern poetry, Z. Herbert, W.H. Auden, R. Lowell, S. Plath, Kinsella, E. Muir, Marlowe, John Clare, H. MacDiarmid, D. Thomas's "Do Not Go Gentle...," E. Bishop, and R. Burns.
Section Three: S. Smith, Calvino's "Mr. Palomar" (an excellent book and review of it), Norman MacCaig, Ted Hughes, and C. Milosz (who writes marvelous verse).
This is a superb collection. I also recommend Heaney's meditations on Frost. He always attempts to uncover--to 'dig into'--features in poetry that make it 'good,' and in so doing, he immerses himself in a loved craft and discipline, to create vibrant, poetic prose. One gets the feeling here that Heaney is showing-off his 'finders keepers' treasures--his favorites--his cherished agate marbles, which clink and rattle in a bag of sensuous word play.

Utterly alone for weeks at a time, Waterman struggles against freezing conditions, the tricks played on him by his own mind and dangers more complex than aggressive bears, stormy seas and mosquito blizzards. Following the advice of an Inuit shaman, who said that “those things hidden from others” are discovered only “far from the dwellings of men, through privation and suffering,” Waterman kayaks, skis, dogsleds and sails across the Great Solitudes in a thrilling and ultimately successful quest for this “true wisdom,” arriving at a profound understanding of environment and culture.

When Jonathan Waterman set out to cross the Arctic Circle by way of kayak, cross-country skis, and a dogsled, he was less interested in conquering the 2,200 miles between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans than in learning to live as the Inuit had before him (Inuit, for The People, is the name Canadian Eskimos prefer). Good thing, for the Arctic, as revealed in this candid and engrossing travelogue, is no place for jock-style adventure. Over the course of three summers, Waterman paddled through storms, capsized in 39-degree water, blacked out, and was bitten by thousands of mosquitoes, smoked out by exploding underground seams of coal, and chased by a grizzly bear. The land was so vast and empty that swans and bears vanished before him, ice chunks appeared as kayaks, and driftwood morphed into people in a disorienting series of mirages. Perhaps most challenging of all for Waterman was spending weeks at a time in this setting without seeing another soul. Under these circumstances, he had no choice but to draw on remnant instincts to avoid disaster, forget about time and goals, and to connect deeply to "the Earth and Its Great Weather," as the Inuit say. "Any committed adventurer eventually learns that equipment and performance are just a means to that greater end of finding your place in the natural world," writes Waterman, who proves he is willing to go the extra thousand miles for a moment of insight.

Of course, he also experiences moments of unparalleled serenity--caribou trotting out to his boat, belugas spouting around him, grizzlies on the shore--and creates warm friendships with the Inuit themselves, who have changed radically since their own days of traveling by kayak and dogsled. Waterman works admirably to understand The People without judging them, though he is discouraged by what he finds left of the culture he emulates--communities caught in a "depraved limbo, somewhere between paradise and tuberculosis." As with the Arctic itself, the Inuit turn out to be more complex in reality--and ultimately more appealing--than in mythology. In 1997, Waterman (In the Shadow of Denali) embarked on a series of solo journeys across the arctic, taking the southernmost water route through Canada's northern islands. During the first summer, he went west, from the Mackenzie River delta to Prudhoe Bay in Alaska. In ensuing springs and summers, he completed his 2,200 mile odyssey, proceeding east in stages from the Mackenzie delta to Lord Mayor Bay. Waterman made most of the trips by kayak, but walked across the Eskimo lakes and took one snowmobile side trip with Inuit guides. He vividly portrays the arctic landscape, people, weather and wildlife, but as he reiterates ad infinitum, his goal was to experience solitude in the wilderness, and much of the book consists of self-absorbed ruminations on braving arctic waters alone in a kayak and pulling a sled across frozen lakes and tundra with only a dog for company. Waterman admits that he didn't get all that close to wilderness since he was supported by a wealth of modern technologies, from a Gore-Tex dry suit to a specially constructed kayak, and could fly home any time. His encounters with the Inuit and his candid observations of their culture and poverty-stricken, often brutal lifestyle provide the most interesting passages. Interwoven discussions of arctic explorers, the history of the Northwest Passage and the Hudson Bay Company, relations between the Inuit and the Canadian government, and anthropologists who have studied the Inuit flesh out his narrative. Though there is no map to help the reader follow his complex itinerary, Waterman includes appendixes of the birds and animals he saw, a Canadian arctic cultures timeline, a section on Inuit language and an extensive bibliography. 85 b&w photos and illus.

Waterman (Most Hostile Mountain, Kayaking the Vermillion Sea), a mountaineer, birder, photographer, and avid kayaker, spent three summers crossing the Northwest Passage from west to east by kayak, skis, and dogsled. More than just a self-propelled journey across the frozen north, this is an in-depth look into Inuit culture. Journeying across remote areas alone in a kayak, the author portrays the Inuit people as hospitable and willing to share their food and shelter with a complete stranger. He also explains that they were content to live as nomads, following the game and living off the land until the "Kabloona" (an Inuit term for bushy-eyebrowed whites) tried to help by paying them to live in stationary villages. Waterman's compassionate account reveals a people who are far happier to be out on the land hunting for game than gathered together in squalid, government-built towns. He freely uses many Inuit terms throughout the book and includes a glossary, a complete list of his wildlife observations, an Arctic cultures time line, and a very detailed bibliography. The island within us

This is a "must read" for anyone in four categories; the traveler (as opposed to the tourist), the kayaker, an anthropologist or one interested in hunter-gatherer types of peoples, and the armchair traveller who enjoys a good read. I fall into all groups, but essentially the first three, and for this reason I thourougly enjoyed practically every page. As I plan to be in the northern isles of Japan for a month and half, alone with my kayak, in part for the physical challenge and in part to take a contemporary look at the Ainu, the indigenous peoples of Hokkaido, the Kurile Islands and Sakhalin, I can fully appreciate the difficulties Mr. Waterman went through in a predominently harsh climate, turbulent seas, dealing with wild and unpredicable creatures, and finding a people who once had a "noble" way of life (or at least very close to nature) now enjoying motorized transportation, over-heated houses, at violent videos (the author mentions that Claude Van Damme seems to be especially popular). I will likely face the same challengess and disappointments. The only criticism I have lies in the writing style. If I had been Mr. Waterman's editor, I would have told him to keep in mind that those subjective references - "me,my,mine & I" distance the reader. I realise it is difficult being isolated and writing the narrative about your own journey not to include those words, but my advise would have been to try not to "own" too much. One doesn't want to appear ego-centric or repetitive. I was previously aware of Mr. Waterman's endeavors from his 1996 book, "Kayaking the Vermilion Sea" (Touchstone), and had noticed those writing traits then, though his present book is tenfold better. However that said, just the mere difficulty of what this author undertook, his sentivities towards nature in general, the peoples of the Artic (well-researched as can be seen in the bibliography), his subjectiveness, and his enduring love of his lady friend, June, will earn this book a well-deserved place of honor in my library.

Multi-level Success

Jonathan Waterman's book succeeds on several levels. The most important is the treatment the author gives of the Inuit and Inuvialuit communities, their history, and his own interactions with them. The presentation is unsentimental and the reader is rewarded with a view of things as they are. The book presents the historical and present situations in a way that enhances our understanding, though it is by no means clear what exactly should be done by Canada or Nunavut to alleviate the problems. One can only wish the best for this amazing far-north culture.
From the point of view of adventure, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in solo exploration. Waterman is as experienced as they come in the realm of long, strenuous adventures in arduous conditions. He takes on this multi-year kayaking trek without a radio, even though he knows he is not an expert kayaker. While he deals with various problems and incidents, the most intriguing problem seems to be that of simply being alone for long stretches. He survives it, but it was apparently not easy.
Finally, the book succeeds in conveying the beauty of nature (landscape, seascape, birds, and animals) in this shoreline environment. For the author, and probably for most who have visited it, the Arctic is a very special place, and the book, in its prose, general spirit, and photographs conveys that. Regarding the pictures, I appreciated the fact that in addition to the standard color insert, which has excellent photos, the author and publisher have decided to include many black-and-white pictures in the text. These enhance the presentation a lot, especially compared to many adventure books that get published quickly and without real thought to the inclusion of the best photos.

Chandler reigns

I first came across Chandler when I heard the Coen brothers interview and discovered that 'The Big Lebowski' was written in the style of a Chandler novel (name itself being derived from 'The Big Sleep'). This alone interested me enough to buy and read The Big Sleep.

Six novels later, I'm still reading Chandler novels, and still finding each and every one different, interesting and intriguing. The main character Marlowe is a wisecracking detective, wary of women - whom he obviously mistrusts - except for the "bad type of women", for whom he does not particularly care. He is also a complex, intelligent man, often an altruist who goes to some extraordinary lengths for his clients, even when he's not paid.

Novels are usually set in 30's/40's Hollywood and Bay City (which is since called something else), and are especially nostalgic, if you've lived in the surrounding areas.

Chandler's writing is funny and unique - the stories - all told in first person, are written so that the reader is both aware of Marlowe's conscious thoughts, and at the same time, when the ending or some pivotal point in the story arrives - is not. This point is not easy to describe, but it works extremely well - the stories are always amusing, captivating, and suspenseful.

I will easily recommend any Chandler novel for anyone interested in mysteries, as well as to those that enjoy unconventional styles of storytelling.

Chandler’s Later Novels

The Lady in the Lake & The Little Sister & The Long Goodbye & Playback

The usual job for a private investigator is to locate a missing person (skip-tracing). Serious crimes are left to the police. But in fiction it is the private investigator who solves crimes for the entertainment of the readers. It was different for Sherlock Holmes in the late 19th century.

The Lady in the Lake.
Philip Marlowe is asked to locate a missing wife who said she was going for a divorce. He goes to a vacation home by this lake in the mountains. He inspects her last known location. Another wife also went missing. A body is found in the lake! He learns the wife’s old boyfriend is also dead. Was there some scandal that involved a doctor’s nurse? The lack of survivors means no story for the newspapers.

The Little Sister.
Philip Marlowe is asked to find a missing brother who moved from Kansas. He visits the last known address. Then people are found murdered. Marlowe finds a claim check for photographs. The investigation continues until the secret it revealed in the last pages. Can a snapshot of a couple lead to murders?

The Long Goodbye.
One morning an old friend asks Marlowe for a ride to an airport. When Marlowe returns home he finds police detectives waiting for him. The man’s wife was murdered! Marlowe is held until somebody paid a lawyer to represent him. There was little in the newspapers. Marlowe is released after a shocking surprise. Could Terry kill in such a brutal manner? If not, was he just a fall guy? Mrs Roger Wade visits Marlowe at home; her husband has been missing for three days. Marlowe uses his one clue and investigates to find Roger Wade.

Playback.
Philip Marlowe received an early morning telephone call to follow a passenger on a train. He knows little about this job, and learns others are interested for their own reasons. Was she a murderess who got off because of a quirk in the law? Is there a nasty blackmailer pestering her? Will somebody stop him? Marlowe has the same kind of adventures with the same kind of people that you find in his earlier work.
