About the Author
Alice Hoffman has published more than two dozen works of fiction, including Property Of, Here on Earth, The Ice Queen, The Dovekeepers, and The Third Angel. Alice Hoffman's first novel didn't gain as much attention as The Outsiders By S.E. Hinton

In my opinion this book was just as good, if not better, than S.E. Hinton's "The Outsiders" yet I never heard of "Property Of" by Alice Hoffman. I stumbled upon it by accident. I just recently received a Kindle reader as a gift. I was very anxious to read Alice Hoffman's newest novel "The Dovekeepers". On the kindle it was too expensive. I searched all of Alice Hoffman's novels and "Property Of" was the cheapest one available on kindle. I received a free sample and loved the simplicity as well as the story line. I bought it. I was never in a gang yet I was fascinated by them. I was also excited to learn this was her first novel. If you like an author it is a pleasure to read their first novel. I was so proud of her choosing this subject matter and I momentarily lost myself inside "Property Of". The leather jackets; the cold New York weather; the sex in the Chevy with Mckay; the spoon; the needle and the track marks. I knew this world but never stumbled into it. It was always right there in front of me growing up in Queens, New York. Suddenly I realized Alice Hoffman was never in a gang but she imagined she was and this is how a great novelist gets into a character. She created an entire world from her imagination based on reality. If I was a New York high school English teacher I would have this on the reading list. It is available on Kindle as well as in paperback for a couple of bucks. Great High School novel even though I read it and enjoyed it at the ripe old age of forty seven. Sometimes a first novel is just as impressive as the ones that follow. Alice Hoffman is worth every written word she puts to print. "Property Of" is the first shot of heroin for an Alice Hoffman fan. I am addicted.

Gritty, visceral, old school, romance, gangs, heroin, drugstores...and Alice Hoffman does it her way with magic and spells. No, it doesn't "make sense," but neither does life or love or lust. The reasons we leave and the reasons we stay often don't make much sense, either. I LOVED IT. This was her first novel and has been here-to-fore unpublished. Another benefit of digital books, shelves, and libraries.

If you've never read Hoffman, pick this up for $0.99 and if nothing else read the Introduction. It will remind you of the days when it wasn't about the sell; it was about the write.

The only reason I didn't give it 5-stars? Those little "let me tell you what's going on" moments...stripped of those passages...it would have been an unequivocal 5-star.

I adore it!

I am in love with this book. The first time I read it I was about 12 years old, which is much too young. But I read it again once I was old enough to really understand it and it's definitely one of my favorites. I've read it so many times because it just leaves you wanting more. I just have this need to understand the characters on a deeper level. They're all developed so well. The narrator especially is so real that I actually find myself worrying about what happens to her when the story ends even though I know she's a fictional character. It's definitely one of my absolute favorite books and kind of reminds me of a female Catcher in the Rye. I love it!

Seamus Heaney is an Irish treasure in literature. His works display the "concrete reality" that he aimed for in his poetry. My favorite poem is "Digging". He is talented in fusing agric./pol./soc./religion themes together in one poem.

I have not read all of these poems as yet as each one calls me to read it over and over. Heaney's startling analogies and humorous twists charm me and shake me up. Listen to Heaney's music in "the pedal treads hanging relieved of the boot of the law" in describing a constable's bicycle.

good portrait of Heaney's development

Heaney's "Selected Poems" shows a good picture of the poet's development up to "Station Island" and the sonnets of Glanmore and Clearances. Like Yeats, Heaney had to go through a few volumes before he "became good": except for "The Tolland Man," the poems selected from his first four collections are flat, even the much-anthologized "Digging," which perseveres in anthologies only because it illustrates Heaney's overall philosophy. With the bog poems from "North," Heaney comes into his own, and he has managed to remain at this consistent level of excellence since then.

About the Author
Aram Goudsouzian is chair of the history department at the University of Memphis. He earned his B.A. from Colby College and his Ph.D. from Purdue University. Martin Luther King, Stokely Carmichael, the new chairman of SNCC, and Floyd McKissick, the head of CORE, took up Meredith’s cause.
Compared with the unparalleled success of the Selma to Montgomery march just sixteen months earlier, the Meredith march was a disappointment. Moderate leaders hoped the march would build support for the Civil Rights bill then before Congress. Radical spokesmen, most notably Carmichael, wanted to turn the Civil Rights Movement towards Black Nationalism and away from nonviolence. Reporters covering the march focused on disagreements among the leaders and anti-white implications of the new slogan. Largely overlooked was the march’s announced goal of promoting black voter registration.
Goudsouzian has done extensive research on the events and personalities involved in the Meredith march. He has interviewed a wide variety of participants and observers. He scrupulously avoids taking sides among the various factions and points out benefits of the march as well its less positive consequences.
Students of the Civil Rights Movement will learn much they previously did not know from reading Down to the Crossroads.

I was there. This book rings true.

Just finished reading the copy the author sent me. The title takes a famous phrase from blues pioneer Robert Johnson to refer to the ideological crossroads where the non-violence and integration of the “beloved community” of the early ‘60s Civil Rights Movement splintered with the poorly understood messages of Black Power and separatism. This book strikes a reasonably good balance between detailed documentation of the behind-the-scenes machinations of the national leaders who converged on the 1966 March overnight after the loner Meredith was shot, and the day-to-day trudging of the foot soldiers like myself, interspersed with the terror and anger of violent clashes in Philadelphia and Canton. This was not only “the last of the great civil rights marches,” but also the last time the leadership of every civil rights organization from the Urban League to SNCC struggled face-to-face over strategy and philosophy for days on end. It’s all there - the egos of the national leaders, the pragmatism of the local leaders, the heroism of the local people, the viciousness of Mississippi law enforcement, officials and the white public, and the callous neglect of the Federal Government. This is a dramatic read for those of us who were there, and those who weren’t; and it breaks ones heart to understand what we went through to start registering voters after the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and what is happening now with the Supreme Court decisions and rash of voter suppression laws.

Came here directly from C-SPAN and an interview between the author, Aram Goudsouzian, and Rich Benjamin. As an American of European heritage, I was stunned by the clarity, even-handedness, and insightful light shown on truly a crossroads, a choice, and a road less traveled (as in examined) yet one that is now built into our infrastructure. The chase - I want to buy - I want to own - I want to read this book, because it vividly brings into focus for me the years I didn't really understand what was happening, when it was happening. I grew up during the 1960's, and read the newspaper, because I carried and delivered it, every day. The Des Moines Register, first, in the snow and rain in the morning, then later, The Burlington Hawk-Eye as it was known then, in the afternoon. I was 10 years old in 1963 and I knew a lot of what I read in the newspaper. Growing up in Iowa, I didn't see directly any of this struggle, yet I knew of it like seeing far off lightning on the horizon, and straining to hear the silent thunder.

I want to hear the thunder, and the stories, from the people who marched this march. I was too far away at the time to hear it, but I know it was a complex time that was not well told in the newspapers of the time.

By the way, during the interview, I learned something important. I was waiting to hear about how James Meredith died on the march. Turns out I was misinformed, or misheard, or mis-whatevered. He didn't die on the march, the would be assassin used birdshot, and Meredith recovered. Even more fascinating, the shooter, as of the 201? 10? 14 interview, was still alive, but has refused interviews with the author. I hope to hear more from this author.

Dishes Piled in the Sink, Ashtrays Overflowing....America's Dark Side

It's always exciting to discover a terrific new writer, especially when it's an accident. Last year at The Strand I picked up a copy of Frank Bill's collection of short stories, CRIMES IN SOUTHERN INDIANA, because I dug the cover, the title font and the fact that it was a first-time author. Like most books on my too-read shelf it took a while to work its way to the top of the pile, but man, what a rush. This 2011 collection from FSG is a geographically based collection, similar to Oscar Casares' BROWNSVILLE and Tom Franklin's POACHERS. When one thinks of Indiana one may think of the film HOOSIERS, the city of Gary and the vast farms. However, what Bill points out in this staggering, violent collection is Southern Indiana's juxtaposition to rural Kentucky, a sometimes lawless land ran more by clans than politicians. Only the television show JUSTIFIED and the film WINTER'S BONE has seen characters like this. The opening of the seventeen stories, HILL CLAN CROSS takes place in a seedy motel room when a set of brothers realize their sons are skimming off the THC crop. Violence occurs. In ALL THE AWFUL a young girl is sold by her grandfather to sexual slavery while in the poignancy and surprising BEAUTIFUL EVEN IN DEATH a man's murder of his lover is seen by his son. Part of my job often takes me into the more rural, meth-soaked counties in Tennessee and Bill's descriptions of the people, the codes and the places are spot-on, and rarely pretty. Cardboard is placed over the broken windows, dishes are piled in the sink, ashtrays are overflowing. The smell of old food, mold and cigarettes never leave the furniture. Sex is on a bare mattress. While the stories are all independent, many of the same characters surface, answering questions raised in previous stories. Soldiers come back from Vietnam, and years later Afghanistan, finding it difficult to cope once they've returned. Mother's choose dope over their children, an in-law is murdered for his property. Bill shows the seedy dark side to rural America that drugs have delivered to some of the country's most beautiful vistas. Bill's first novel, DONNYBROOK comes out Spring 2013 and I hope it delivers on the incredible writing and characterizations he illustrates with disturbing realism in this marvelous collection of stories.

tough read but good

Frank Bill's short story collection is a very tough read. Like eating a plate of broken teeth. But hard to put down. Its pretty damn depressing, but each character feels complete and realistic. Bill's descriptions of violence and setting drip with nicotine stains and really put you into each story. There are few redeeming characters in the book, and the one's that barely pass as human have deep flaws of their own. Dont go into this thinking it will be a pleasant read, because its gritty, violent, and very very bleak.

Disappointed

I was very excited to read this book after seeing it compared to Donald Ray Pollock, who I consider to be one of the best crime fiction writers period. However, this is just so poorly written that I could barely finish. The characters are so unbelievable and trite that they border on the satirical. The style and tone seem to shift from paragraph to paragraph, and the language felt forced. Overall, just poorly executed. I had to force myself to finish this one.

About the Author
Henry James was born on April 15, 1843, on Washington Place in New York to the most intellectually remarkable of American families. His father, Henry James Sr., was a brilliant and eccentric religious philosopher; his brother was one of the first great American psychologists and the author of the influential Pragmatism; his sister, Alice, though an invalid for most of her life, was a talented conversationalist, a lively letter writer, and a witty observer of the art and politics of her time.

In search of the proper education for his children, Henry senior sent them to schools in America, France, Germany, and Switzerland. Returning to America, Henry junior lived in Newport, briefly attended Harvard Law School, and in 1864 began contributing stories and book reviews to magazines. Two more trips to Europe led to his final decision to settle there, first in Paris in 1875, then in London next year.

James's first major novel, Roderick Hudson, appeared in 1875, but it was Daisy Miller (1878) that brought him international fame as the chronicler of American expatriates and their European adventures. His novels include The American (1877), Washington Square (1880),Princess Casamassima (1886), and the three late masterpieces, The Wings of the Dove (1902), The Ambassadors (1903) and The Golden Bowl (1904). He also wrote plays, criticism, autobiography, travel books (including The American Scene, 1907) and some of the finest short stories in the English language.

His later works were little read during his lifetime but have since come to be recognized as forerunners of literary modernism. Upon the outbreak of World War I, James threw his energies into war relief work and decided to adopt British citizenship. One month before his death in 1916, he received the Order of Merit from King George V.

A Great Deal, for James lovers and newbies

This is a tremendous book - some of the greatest stories ever written, attractively packaged and reasonably priced. These are not really "short stories", as most of them are longer than 50 pages, and they all require careful attention, but the effort is well worth it. While some are better than others, there is not a weak story in the book.

Loved it, Loved It, LOVED IT!!

This was the best money I've spent on a book this year, maybe ever, and although I'm not much of a poetry book-buyer, I read my share of books. (I've reviewed gay- and lesbian-themed books free-lance for over 15 years.) "Love Speaks Its Name" is simply an excellent anthology of gay- and lesbian-themed poetry with artists as diverse as Sappho, Shakespeare, Whitman, Cavafy, Cole Porter, and several Baby Boomers sounding off on AIDS as well as traditional themes of love.

Why do I like this little volume so much? For one thing, it's part of the well-regarded "Everyman" library, which is to Knopf what Modern Library is to Random House. This means you can purchase identically-sized volumes of literature, even erotic poetry, from the same line. The publishers of "Love Speaks Its Name" took a fairly traditional, quality-oriented approach to content (including recent poets, as I said); but although the binding is a conservative navy blue the bound-in bookmarker ribbon is lavender (cute, no?).

Most of the anthologies of gay or lesbian poetry I've reviewed over the past 15 years fall into one of two categories (1) the professor had some favors to pay off, so excellence took a back seat to other factors (though in many cases you might not know this from the impenetrable deconstructionist jargon that constitutes the introduction); or, (2) the regional "Let's assemble a book! All comers welcome!" Well meant, but not always successful. With its erudition, user-friendly language and delineation of Love into themes like "Longing" and "Ecstasy," "Love Speaks Its Name" is a class act all the way.

For a ridiculously small amount of money you can immerse yourself in this book and find out just why Cavafy is so highly regarded, even in translation, why Auden is still audacious today, why Amy Levy's young death was such a loss to the world of poetry, and discover the NON-bowdlerized lyrics to "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" (there are so many versions floating around it's hard to find the real deal).

All in all, very highly recommended.

**UPDATE** (March 2012): I just bought a new copy of this book and sadly, discovered that both the cover and the ribbon are now bright red, a slight loss in symbolism. But the contents are as wonderful as ever. - a. smalling

An Absolute Joy

I don't think anyone needs to be gay or lesbian to love this book. There are so many wonderful poems and poets, and such a range of emotions, all of them conveying what J.D. McClatchy in his beautiful preface calls the "anxiety sewn into the lining of euphoria." Anxious for good reason, of course: such love was compelled to not to "speak its name" for fear of arrest, conviction, imprisonment and disgrace. The poems are helpfully arranged according to the journey of love (as is true of the recent anthology, Sonnets for Sinners: Everything One Needs to Know About Illicit Love), my most favorite recent acquisition. If you like either of these books you'll want both. My favorite among gay/lesbian poems is Richard Barnfield's "Glove"--such a beautiful sonnet, and to my surprise not very well known. It's worth buying this book just to get that poem. (My favorite in the Sonnets for Sinners book, is Princess Diana's "Hearts", a delight that John Wareham says he "tinkered" together from one of Diana's interviews.) The other book in same league, to my mind anyway, is the Everyman anthology, Erotic Poems (Everyman's Library Pocket Poets). But start with Love That Speaks Its Name-- it really is something very special

According to Ashenburg (The Mourner's Dance), the Western notion of cleanliness is a complex cultural creation that is constantly evolving, from Homer's well-washed Odysseus, who bathes before and after each of his colorful journeys, to Shaw's Eliza Doolittle, who screams in terror during her first hot bath. The ancient Romans considered cleanliness a social virtue, and Jews practiced ritual purity laws involving immersion in water. Abandoning Jewish practice, early Christians viewed bathing as a form of hedonism; they embraced saints like Godric, who, to mortify the flesh, walked from England to Jerusalem without washing or changing his clothes. Yet the Crusaders imported communal Turkish baths to medieval Europe. From the 14th to 18th centuries, kings and peasants shunned water because they thought it spread bubonic plague, and Louis XIV cleaned up by donning a fresh linen shirt. Americans, writes Ashenburg, were as filthy as their European cousins before the Civil War, but the Union's success in controlling disease through hygiene convinced its citizens that cleanliness was progressive and patriotic. Adult/High School—This is a fascinating examination of the changing notions of what it means to be clean, and how those concepts fit into the worldview of different societies. The book is especially valuable for exploring the daily lives of people in past societies, but also for providing perspective on our attitudes toward ourselves, our bodies, and our world. It begins with the communal baths of the Greeks and Romans and explores the religious and ritual aspects of bathing, including Christian baptism. The public bath returned with the Crusaders, who brought the custom back to Europe in the form of the Turkish bath. With the plague and fears of communicable diseases, people avoided water-which they feared made the body vulnerable-in favor of linen cloth, which could be changed regularly, in lieu of bathing. Fear of immersing the body in water continued into the 20th century. Ashenburg, who uses interesting quotes from contemporaries to illustrate her history, speculates that in the future, when water shortages dictate new concepts of cleanliness, our own day may be seen as an age of excessive bathing and deodorizing.—Tom Holmes, King Middle School, Berkeley, CA

A Sordid History

Do you smell bad? If you are reading this, it's a sure thing that you are a resident of the 21st century, and it's probable that you also are a resident of a society that reinforces regular bathing and use of deodorizers, so the answer is probably no. But then, if you were living five hundred years ago, the answer would probably be no, too, although if we were somehow to time-machine someone from that time to our own, we would probably answer yes in his particular instance. Katherine Ashenburg says that cleanliness is relative, or in her words "clean is a moving target", in her surprising history of attitudes toward dirt and grooming, _The Dirt on Clean: An Unsanitized History_ (North Point Press). In her introduction, she writes, "Even more than in the eye or the nose, cleanliness is in the mind of the beholder. Every culture defines it for itself, choosing what it sees as the perfect point between squalid and over-fastidious." She makes the point by citing cigarette smoke; only a few decades ago, airplanes and restaurants were full of it, and most people, even nonsmokers, hardly noticed, let alone complained. Now we pick up on the smell immediately and take offense. "The nose is adaptable and teachable," Ashenburg writes, and she backs up the assertion with plenty of historical evidence. Her book gives a peculiar social history, one not covered in most history books. It is wonderfully entertaining, even though much of it is uncomfortable reading, first because those other people were so much dirtier than ourselves and they didn't seem to mind it, and second because we have been sold by advertising on a hypercleanliness that is beyond anything that health or social fitness demands.

The Romans didn't use soap, though they liked soaking in public baths. The cleaning got done by oiling themselves up and using a special metal tool called a strigil to scrape off the oil and dirt. Social bathing was not something that fit into a Christian world view. "Many early saints embraced filth enthusiastically and ingeniously," says Ashenburg. The head of a convent in the fourth century warned her nuns, "A clean body and a clean dress mean an unclean soul." The Spanish Inquisition knew it was on the right track if an accused was "known to bathe," and Spanish confessors would not absolve those who washed regularly. There was an eventual turnaround for cities in which visitors could take the waters. Going to a spa was medical therapy, but eventually bathing was once again for getting clean. Advice books told people how to take baths for the best effect. It was nineteenth century America that took the lead in promoting personal hygiene. Ashenburg cites several reasons why this might be so, including having more room for bathrooms and the cleaning lessons of soldiers in the Civil War. Eventually, mild soaps from vegetable sources (like palm and olive oil to make Palmolive, get it?) insinuated themselves into homes by means of advertising, a commercial endeavor about which Americans have always been enthusiastic.

The advertisers, however, were adept at creating and exploiting fears, subtly helping people to think "Everyone would like me more if I didn't smell bad." "Halitosis" was barely a medical term before Listerine let people know that their bad breath was keeping them from happy marriages and fine paychecks. Other firms harnessed women's fears to make a market for vaginal cleaners. Tooth whitening is now big business, even though dentists say the whiteners damage teeth and gums and anyway bright white is not the way healthy teeth naturally look. Our current level of fussing over bodily cleanliness does little for our mental security or our general health. Ashenburg notes at the end of the book that we have come full circle, for modern science from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has anointed simple handwashing as "the single most important means of preventing the spread of infection." Homeric heroes and medieval knights didn't have the science, but they knew that handwashing was a good practice. However, there is little basis for our jumping in with germicidal soaps, which are another aspect of our overcleaning mania. There are serious scientific proposals that cleaning up too much may mean that our immune systems don't get enough exercise to do their job efficiently. _The Dirt on Clean_, with plenty of humor, quotations from centuries of scrubbing or lack thereof, and many illustrations, shows that humans continue to bumble their way into hygiene, whatever the fashionable definition of that might turn out to be.

A super read.....

Katherine Asheburg's The Dirt on Clean: An Unsanitized History is perhaps the best read in 2007. Ashenburg's sense of irony as she delves into the meaning of clean comes across clearly to the reader. I'm not sure Ashenburg intended to be as humorous as she is or whether this sense of irony is what drives the humor, but I found myself smiling throughout the book.

One of the biggest recommendations I can make is to those who teach marketing. It doesn't matter at what level, community college, junior college, or university. If you talk about advertising, product segmentation, target marketing, this is a must read.

I also enjoyed Ashenburg's idea that cleanliness is a moving target. Clean is, in fact, relative. My parents only bathed weekly, as did I and my brother. We're products of the 50's and the Saturday evening bath whether you needed it or not. This fact grosses out my two daughters, products of the 70's and 80's. Of course, they take their twice daily showers that last at least 20 minutes. The problem was so severe that the paint constantly pealed from the woodwork due to exposure to excessive moisture. The point being in just one generation, the definition of cleanliness has shifted and shifted radically.

The Dirt on Clean is loaded with examples pulled from throughout history. Much of western civilizations attitudes toward bathing is owed to our Arab brothers as is using a fork and washing of hands before eating. This is another ironic twist to me.

The Dirt on Clean will be an interesting read on any one who loves to watch our society evolve and change.

too clean

I'm a little disappointed in this book. It's ... too clean. It discusses in detail the number of bathhouses in different centuries, different countries - who cares? I wanted to know the dirty details of people's everyday lives. Some of the things I've always wondered about are - how did frontier pioneers keep eight babies in a succession clean without running water? What did women do during their periods when they didn't even wear underwear? Which creatures lived in Mme Pompadour's towering hair? What were the health effects on years of dirtiness - rashes? bad skin? What are the teeth like if they are not brushed for decades? How old were people when they started loosing their teeth? What was used instead of toilet paper? How did the city streets smell when the chamber pots were emptied there? How did a complete lack of privacy in slums or on a trail affect relationships?

These were some of the things I was hoping to learn about, as they are not often discussed in history books. But none of these was described. This is an informative book (just wasn't for me).

Paris has better French restaurants, Madrid has better Spanish restaurants, and Tokyo has better Japanese restaurants, Grimes concedes, but no city... offers as many national cooking styles, at all price ranges, as New York does. It wasn't always this way. As Grimes points out, it wasn't until the early 19th century that Manhattan and Brooklyn's culinary offerings extended beyond boardinghouse and tavern. His lively, profusely illustrated history veers in one fascinating direction after another, from the proliferation of oyster houses in the 1800s to the original recipe for chop suey. Grimes hits all the obvious high points—Delmonico's, the Automat, Le Pavillion, etc.—but also puts a spotlight on forgotten venues like Forum of the Twelve Caesars, an outsized theme restaurant from the same company that owned the Four Seasons. He gets personal in the final chapter, describing the scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s from his front-line perspective as the restaurant critic for the New York Times. (He has since moved on to the book review desk.) All the material is so fascinating that you'll wish every chapter was at least twice as long, but it's hard to imagine a more entertaining introduction to the subject. (Oct.)

William Grimes was the restaurant critic for The New York Times from 1999 to 2003. He is the author of Straight Up or On the Rocks (NPP, 2001) and My Fine Feathered Friend (NPP, 2002), and the coauthor of The New York Times Guide to New York City Restaurants 2004.

Engrossing exploration of NYC and its obsession with eating out

I started this wonderful book not knowing what to expect. In it I found not only meticulous research but also an evocation of a past New York. We travel with the author from the brawling port of early nineteenth century New York where cuisine would hardly be the word to describe eating habits into the increasing sophistication of an International destination. Filled with references to actual dishes and menus , to the individual restauranteurs who risked and won or lost, and the chefs, waiters and busboys who manned the kitchens the book reveals through the lens of food the excitement , brashness, and vigor of New York over almost 200 years. In the final chapter we find a personal memoir of Grimes' tenure as critic at the Times. It reveals the author's serious dedication to establishing an analytical approach to food criticism as well as revealing the truly nutty and competitive world of restaurants in contemporary New York. Grimes has a ability to encapsulate in a single phrase many convergent social, philosophical and historical forces that spread the narrative far beyond food and into how we live our lives. I recommend this book heartily to anyone who likes to eat, dines out, and is interested in New York.

Great for food historians, maybe less for the casual foodie

If you're looking for a witty guide through the history of food in NYC, that's just not the author's writing personality. Try a different book. That said, books I've seen of that nature often have the air of snobbishness that comes from food the highfalutin foodie types that no one really can stand.

This book is just down to earth history about what happened, why it happened and why it is no longer here. Just a simple but fantastic book about the history of the restaurant business in New York. Aside from making me really hungry, it makes me look at the city's food business in a very different way, i.e. from both historical geography to proximity to business, to necessity all together. To clarify, it's obvious that you're going to find certain restaurants in certain areas. However, is it obvious how that all came to pass and why that specific type of restaurant in that specific manner relative to what exists elsewhere and before it's time? Perhaps to some, but not to me.

The history provided as the reasons for diner and cart culture in NYC was really fantastic. It was an absolute pleasure to learn about how little tea houses came into being. Some of the older names and newer celebrity names are featured throughout making for an interesting tale of the growing landscape of how one "makes it" as a restaurateur.

I particularly loved the description of the German automatic machines. I think I saw a random place on the LES or East Village that still uses this type of vending system. Didn't have time to explore and stop in, but this book has truly inspired me to take a look.

Fascinating for NYer and Non-NYr alike.

Good eating, good reading

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Grimes is an excellent writer who really brings his subject to life. I found myself immersed in the tastes and excitements of New York from the 1800's until the present. In the author's capable hands, food becomes a fascinating prism in which to understand the history of a great city.
