About the Author
James Salter was the celebrated author of six novels (The Hunters, 1957; The Arm of Flesh, 1961; A Sport and a Pastime, 1967; Light Years, 1975; Solo Faces, 1979; and All That Is, 2013) and three books of stories (Dusk and Other Stories, 1988; Last Night, 2005; and Collected Stories, 2013), as well a memoir, Burning the Days (1997). He also had a successful Hollywood career, most notably as the screenwriter ofDownhill Racer (1969). Born in New Jersey in 1926 and raised in New York City, he attended West Point during World War II and served as an officer and a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force from 1945 to 1957. He drew on his combat experiences in Korea for his first two novels, though it was not until the controversial but now-classic A Sport and a Pastime that he considered that he had come close to measuring up to his own standards. He was a recipient of the 1989 PEN/Faulkner Award and the 2012 PEN/Malamud Award. He died in Sag Harbor, New York, in 2015.

Eros imagined . . .

Like Salter's other novels, this book is a study in hero worship. Here the hero is not a fighter pilot ("The Hunters") or an alpine mountain climber ("Solo Faces") but a lover, whose intensely erotic affair with a young French woman is imagined by the novel's narrator, a casual friend who scarcely knows him. Phillip Dean (like a real-life counterpart James Dean) is in his twenties, good looking, intelligent, and with a fatal attraction to fast cars. (Dean Moriarty of Kerouac's "On the Road" also comes to mind.)
As a movie, this would be NC-17 material. Far from romance, it's a graphic portrayal of the unpredictable interplay of desires and emotions between two people physically attracted to each other. And in its fascination with the shifting moods of lovers consumed by their passions, it is "very French."
Though published, and apparently set, in the 1960s, the book captures the look and feel of post-war France. The provincial towns where it takes place are lifeless and silent, seemingly exhausted. Salter's gift for seizing sharply drawn impressions from fleeting images makes the settings almost jump from the page. Written in present tense, his sentences are short and often fragmentary. While evoking the great weight of history, his images have the immediacy of the present. An American reader who has traveled in Europe will recognize the emotions Salter describes.
Meanwhile, the story is layered with ironies. The narrator himself seems to have a life that is almost empty of eros, and he reminds us that for all its graphic detail, he has imagined all the intimacies of Dean and Anne-Marie's affair. Maybe the lesson in this has to do with our own perceived inadequacies and voyeuristic curiosity about the private lives of others, especially celebrities and public figures. Almost 40 years later, Salter's novel stands up very well today, its vision and its ambiguities more pointed than ever.

Objectively, it's great; subjectively, it left a lot to be desired

What makes this modern classic so interesting isn’t the story itself — a love affair between an aimless young American and a beautiful French woman — but Salter’s interesting narrative choices.
The love affair is recounted by a nameless narrator who was once acquainted with the couple, Philip and Anne-Marie. But within the first 10 pages, we’re given a subtle warning: What we’re reading may not be wholly true. Of course, this completely alters the reader’s approach to the novel.
We know that the narrator is somewhat of a timid, solitary man; although he admires many beautiful women from afar, he never finds the courage to approach them. Inevitably, he becomes somewhat infatuated with Philip, who is in many ways his opposite: confident, charming, sexually experienced.
The narrator recalls the love affair between Philip and Anne-Marie with such explicit detail that the reality of it is entirely unclear. Did he simply observe the couple from afar throughout the course of their relationship and fill in all the details himself? Did Philip tell him about his and Anne-Marie’s passionate private life? Or is it possible that Philip doesn’t even exist at all — that he was conjured in the narrator’s imagination as a product of his deepest insecurities and fantasies?
It’s undoubtedly a fascinating approach, and it’s always interesting to encounter an unreliable narrator who is so self-aware and forthcoming of his delusions. I can understand why this book is so critically acclaimed, with its unique narrative and crisp, simple prose. However, coming at this from a purely subjective perspective, I wasn’t all that interested in the story itself, and never felt fully engaged. In stories like this, I prefer getting deep into the heads of the characters, but that’s just not what Salter was going for here.

Yale Dropout Meets Provincial French shopgirl...Nothing much (but sex) happens

This is a curious book. At first I found the 'style' intriguing but it got a little mannered as the book went on. The characters are thoroughly uninteresting rich Americans on the loose in France along with couple of French walk-ons, particularly a young provincial woman who becomes the always willing sexual partner of a Yale drop-out with a rich father whose only attachment to the world aside from his libido is his car. Then there is the sex...and the sex and the sex which we experience in brief flashes of eroticism...as it progresses from one orifice to another. Although certainly not porn, Salter has some difficulty avoiding the here we go again feeling which accompanies practically every encounter...in lieu of conversation of which there is practically none, intelligent or otherwise. It must have been fun to write and for the most part not too difficult to read but the whole set-up is very dated. In any case this was my first book by Salter and I look forward to reading others since he is certainly a 'serious' writer.
