Hiassen gets back to his roots with this (almost) straight-ahead mystery, but doesn't skimp on the funny stuff as he follows the adventures of Jack Tagger, down-on-his-luck journalist relegated to the obit beat at a smalltown Florida daily. While researching a death notice, Jack stumbles by accident upon an actual news story: former rocker Jimmy Stoma has drowned while diving in the Bahamas, and his widow, wannabe star Cleo Rio, can't convince Jack that his death was accidental. The mystery offers Jack a way out of his job-related death fixation ("It's an occupational hazard for obituary writers memorizing the ages at which famous people have expired, and compulsively employing such trivia to track the arc of one's own life") and toward his increasingly lusty feelings for Emma, his 27-year-old editor (" `Bring whipped cream,' I tell her, `and an English saddle' "). But when things turn violent and Jack suddenly has to defend himself with a giant frozen lizard, he enlists the help of his sportswriter friend Juan Rodriguez and teenage club scene veteran Carla Candilla to try to find out why someone is killing off has-been sleaze rockers. A hilarious sendup of exotic Floridian fauna in the newspaper business, the novel offers all the same treats Hiassen's fans have come to crave. What makes this book different is its first-person, present-tense narrative style. Unlike previous capers, which were narrated in the omniscient third person, this book settles squarely in the mystery genre from whence Hiaasen's fame (Double Whammy; Tourist Season, etc.) initially sprang. Despite the absence of perennial Hiaasen favorite Skink, this should make an easy job for Knopf's sales force even easier. In Hiaasen's ninth novel (after Sick Puppy), Jack Tagger is a former investigative reporter demoted to obituaries. When Jimmy Stoma, the lead singer of a once major but now forgotten rock band, dies in a suspicious diving accident, Jack pounces on the opportunity to prove his investigative mettle to his editor and secure his position in an increasingly unpleasant workplace. He interviews the less-than-distraught widow, Cleo Rio, herself the latest hot commodity on the music scene, and studies the lyrics Stoma wrote for his band, the Slut Puppies. Members of Jimmy's old band turn up dead, which suggests foul play. Now Jack has to stay alive as well as convince his editor that the Jimmy Stoma story is important. All this, and a frozen monitor lizard, entices the reader to keep turning the pages. Hiaasen's typical quirky characters and hilarious dialog are in abundance in this thoroughly entertaining novel. For all fiction collections.

Hiaasen Never Disappoints

Carl Hiaasen never disappoints. Basket Case is another in his series of fictional high jinks of the rascals of South Florida and the down-and-out hero who catches them in the end. You get to like the main character whose paper is bought out by money-grubbing entitled rich and who is put into a dark corner of the paper on the obituary desk when he dares speak his mind. Hmm, is Carl writing from what he knows?
Basket Case has a cast of odd characters with hearts of gold and bad guys who are easy to spot, but Hiaasen has a few tricks up his sleeve that makes the ending a surprise.

Hiaasen Rocks and Rolls In This One!

Carl Hiaasen's latest comedy crime novel introduces Jack Tagger; a former star investigative reporter banished to obit writer thanks to a slight confrontation with the paper's CEO at the stockholders' meeting of the giant newspaper conglomerate. Jack is sure that he can get back on the front page with the help of an obituary of some "famous stiff." And when former rocker Jimmy Stoma of Jimmy and Slut Puppies dies in a questionable skin-diving accident he thinks he might have his story. Especially when it looks like someone is trying to kill the remaining Slut Puppies.
Hiaasen abandons his usual environmental pulpit as a subplot in this novel in order to take on the plight of newspapers that are being emasculated by profit hungry publishing conglomerates. Actually, this is a welcome change, and the issue actually plays an important part in the novel's plot. (I also was able to identify with these issues.)
The characters are all well defined with the villains, while still being totally vile, vicious, and evil, this time coming across more as characters and less as caricatures. Because of (and not in spite of) his many quirks, you have to like Jack Tagger and his quest for his front page near impossible dream. By the way, along the way he finds love in the most unlikely of places.
Hiaasen is back in top form with this one, and I recommend it highly!

Change of pace Hiaasen

In Basket Case, Carl Hiaasen - a master of the Floridian comic caper novel - takes a slight break from his usual storytelling. Yes, this novel is comic and in Florida, but Hiaasen has changed his narrative style to tell his tale.
Basket Case is the story of Jack Tagger, a typical Hiaasen hero who is a reporter and somewhat down on his luck. After enraging the paper's owner, Tagger has been condemned to writing obituaries. When a once-famous rock singer dies, Tagger writes the obit and gets a suspicion that foul play was involved...a feeling reinforced when other members of the band also start dying. Tagger sees this as an opportunity to get to the front page again and pursues the mystery.
Unlike Hiaasen's other stories, this novel is told in the first person and the present tense. While still a good story, it winds up limiting his usual abilities. Limited to Tagger's point-of-view, we cannot follow some of the other interesting characters. Of course, there are no really bizarre characters in this story, which is also a change of pace.
In the end, this is a good novel with no real flaws but nothing really standout either; I had fun reading it, but it was not the pure delight of a Tourist Season or a Native Tongue. Hiaasen has written a should-read, not a must-read.
