In this gripping, layered analysis of the brutal civil war in Sudan, Scroggins examines the complex relationship between the West and troubled Africa. She studies it through the experiences of Emma McCune, a romantic, idealistic British aid worker who married a Sudanese warlord responsible for the kind of violence she had been trying to ameliorate. "Emma's War" is what Sudanese called the battle that broke out within the Sudanese rebel movement in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Scroggins, who reported from Sudan for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, plumbs her subject's experiences without engaging in crude psychology as she tracks Emma's early childhood and the suicide of her father. While in college, the restless, adventurous and striking-looking Emma developed a growing fascination with Africa, and African men. Through her keen observations and fluid writing, Scroggins shows how, after arriving in the Sudan, McCune came to drop her veneer as an aid worker and become both second wife to a rebel leader and apologist for the atrocities of rebel groups. McCune, the author writes, was a "natural partisan" with an idealism that "was out of place in the context of a ruthless African civil war." But this is more than just the story of one Westerner gone native. In Scroggins's deft hands, McCune also becomes a symbol for those Westerners who, while well intentioned, eventually harm the developing world more than they help it and become disillusioned in the process.

Emma McCune longed for a more exciting and exotic life than she found in her native England, and when she ventured to Sudan in the 1980s, she found her cause. Swept up in the repercussions of the terrible famine debilitating the country, as well as the complex politics that divided the Muslim northern part of the country from the southern Christian half, Emma became an aid worker. Ever the passionate romantic, Emma fell in love with Riek Machar, an officer in the Sudan People's Liberation Army, and shocked everyone by marrying Riek and taking up the fight for his cause. Interspersed with Emma's story are Scroggins' own stories of her experiences as a journalist in Sudan--seeing starving and enslaved children and trying to make her way around corrupt government officials. A difficult book to read at times, it takes a focused look at the politics in and surrounding Sudan, as well the common people and warriors caught up in the daily struggle to survive. fascinating background to tday's news

This is the book I will give to everyone for a gift this year. It tells an important story about US foreign policy, draws the reader into the little known world of the Sudan, and reads beautifully.

Deborah Scroggins gives voice to a tsunami of human suffering in the Horn of Africa while exposing the cynicism of Southern Sudan's rebel "leadership" and the shallow vanity of the Western aid establishment. Though there is fodder aplenty for condemnation here, Scroggins restrains herself ably (save for an occasional swipe at the usual Western conservative bogeymen).
In the end, this book is a mirror from which the reader cannot escape: How many innocent Africans must starve before I will really care? If not me, who? If not now, when? And once read, Scroggins' frustrating work refuses to rest politely on the bookshelf: this is a real Tragedy, and now the reader, like it or not, has a supporting role.
"Emma's War" marks Deborah Scroggins' first bow on the literary stage since her triumphant screenplay "Death In Decatur." Let's hope there's much more to come from this talented writer.

Sudan - its tragedies and its young aid worker Emma

I couldn't put this book down. Having previously read "Til the Sun Grows Cold: Searching for My Daughter, Emma" by her mother Maggie McCune, I was interested in reading more about Emma's life in the Sudan.
The author cleverly interweaves the story of Emma, a young British aid worker who went out to the Sudan and subsequently fell in love with and married a Sudanese warlord, with the political situation there. It relates the horrors of famine, starvation, war, violence and terrible cruelty on the part of political leaders to their fellow countrymen. In the midst of this Emma wanted to make a difference. She did her best to try and help children and never minded being different herself and was loved and appreciated for it. However, being married to a warlord and becoming part of a very different culture in the end became the hugest of challenges though her loyalty to her husband appeared never to waver.
So many efforts have been made at providing humanitarian aid for the Sudan - almost all thwarted by people who were out for their own ends. I was shocked and saddened to read of so much political intrigue, hatred and prejudice - and of the devastation of what must in reality be a very beautiful country. What was brought home harshly to me were the tragic accounts of boy soldiers captured at a very tender age to be enlisted in the military. Mostly they died of starvation.
The book is well researched and written with feeling. I would recommend it to all who wish to know more about this particular country and its misfortunes and also about a very brave young woman, Emma McCune Machar, who tried so hard to play her part in providing humanitarian aid to the Sudan.
