Trying It Out in America: Literary and Other Performances, by Richard Poirier

The experimental genius of American artists-interpreted by one of our most dependably brilliant critics.

Richard Poirier suggests, in the title of his new book, that the United States has been uncommonly hospitable to literary and artistic experimentation, to innovation and daring. Just as the nation likes to imagine itself as always in a state of becoming and renewal, some of its greatest writers seem willing to accept a measure of neglect during their lifetimes while remaining confident of posthumous triumph. With analytical daring and shrewd literary delicacy, Poirier advances these themes in essays ranging from Emerson and Whitman to "those avowed imperialists of the novelistic imagination Herman Melville, Henry James, and Norman Mailer," along with kindred twentieth-century figures such as T. S. Eliot and Frank O'Hara, Gertrude Stein and Marianne Moore.

Poirier's explorations of the American scene are not limited to poets and novelists. His moving account of the American ballets of George Balanchine, of Bette Midler in performance, of the reclusive Arthur Inman-whose immense diary offers incomparable glimpses into daily life during World War II-and his challenging refutations of some persistent myths of American "manhood" and of America itself, by outside observers like Jean Baudrillard or Martin Amis, will bring readers to a new appreciation of the most interesting (and difficult) features of American culture.

Amazon.com Review
Among the figures Richard Poirier takes on in this collection of book reviews and critical essays are titans of America's queer literary tradition such as Walt Whitman and Gertrude Stein (plus, among more modern writers, Truman Capote and Frank O'Hara). But Trying It Out in America is not queer criticism, though the chapters on Balanchine's choreography and Bette Midler's 1975 Broadway musical revue certainly make such an interpretation tempting. There's a broader concern at stake, in that the objects of Poirier's attention are "in an always precarious, quite often faltering equilibrium. They hope to appeal to a large contemporary audience who buys, reads, and spreads the good word about books. At the same time they write in a fashion meant to be taken as original and likely to be thought difficult." Thus there are chapters on Gore Vidal's historical sagas and Norman Mailer's Ancient Evenings (deemed his "strangest book"), and a consideration of outsider perspectives on America, including those of Jean Baudrillard and Martin Amis. The collection is hampered somewhat by the time-specific nature of many of the essays, which were first published as book reviews in journals such as The New York Review of Books. But as a time capsule of literary concerns of late-20th-century America, it is a sophisticated and intelligent read.

From Publishers Weekly
One of the foremost critics of American literature over the past 30 years, Poirier (Poetry & Pragmatism), a disciple of Emerson, insists that the works he admiresAwhether Walt Whitman's, Gertrude Stein's or Norman Mailer'sAmaintain an "excess of energy" that resists all attempts to pin them down. In this collection, he gathers 19 of his longer book reviews. While most discuss poets and fiction writers, directly or through their critics and biographers, choreographer George Balanchine and pop artist Bette Midler also turn up. The critic expertly traces his favored writers' complex aims and ambitions. What matters for Poirier is how the poems and novels work for their authors, the "inferable compositional enterprise more than the finished composition." As always for Poirier, the presiding genius is Emerson, whose goals and virtues turn out to characterize not only Whitman but also Stein, Frank O'Hara, Henry James and Herman Melville. Emerson also sponsors Poirier's insistence that "the finished poem, any oeuvre, matters less than does the effort that went into the making of it." Poirier offers insights into gender and sexuality: he scourges homophobic critics, then turns around to scourge new-style readers whose "politicized fervor for merely social referents" prevents them from reading anything well. Most of these very engaging book reviews double as readings of Emerson, and triple as defenses of literature. Anyone who enjoys literary criticism will care for at least some of them. (June) FYI: Poirier is the editor of Raritan and the chairman of the board of the Library of America.

From Library Journal
Poirier is a distinguished and perceptive critic of American literature. These 19 essays, many of which appeared originally as book reviews, are loosely organized around the notion that American writers are particularly open to literary experiment. The authors covered range from American renaissance figures like Emerson and Melville to modernists like Gertrude Stein and T.S. Eliot to more contemporary writers such as Norman Mailer and Gore Vidal. Not restricting himself to literary works, Poirier also includes articles on pop star Bette Midler and choreographer George Balanchine. Although the essays may have been conceived of separately, they are unified somewhat by Poirer's wide-ranging comparisons and by his exploration of several recurrent themes: the idea of American manhood, the meaning of literary success and failure, and the American writer's desire to "make it new." Insightful, Less Than Delightful

Dense. Deep. That Poirier knows his stuff. He knows it cold, and he's been doing a lot of thinking about American authors, too. He's got some fine ideas about them. And a mighty big vocabulary he uses in expressing those ideas. What he hasn't got is any way into his thinking for people who don't know as much as he does. He doesn't talk down to this uninitiated reader; he simply ignores him/her. I confess I could only get about halfway through his latest, and I'm the kind of reader who doesn't quit lightly. So while I found some good stuff in here -- his writings on Whitman especially -- I got tired of having to reread everything twice. Maybe you'll have more patience.
