Confucius has become synonymous in the West with Eastern wisdom: profound and mysterious. Confucius addressed all these questions in dialogues, stories, and anecdotes gathered together as "The Analects, which offers not lofty moral prescriptions but sensible advice based on principles of justice and moderation. About the Author
Confucius [551-479 BC], though of noble descent, was born in humble circumstances. He believed that politics is only an extension of morals, and spent ten years travelling through the various states of China spreading his ideas. When he realised that there was no way of converting the feudal rulers to his way of thinking he returned to Lu and spent the rest of his life there teaching his pupils. D.C Lau has held a number of professorships in the field of Chinese language and literature.
Arthur Waley (1889-1966) is highly regarded for his many translations of Chinese and Japanese literature.
Sarah Allan teaches classical Chinese and Chinese philosophy at Dartmouth College.

1The Master said, It is Goodness that gives to a neighborhood its beauty. One who is free to choose, yet does not prefer to dwell among the Good?how can he be accorded the name of wise?
2The Master said, Without Goodness a man
Cannot for long endure adversity,
Cannot for long enjoy prosperity.
The Good Man rests content with Goodness; he that is merely wise pursues Goodness in the belief that it pays to do so.
3,4Of the adage ?Only a Good Man knows how to like people, knows how to dislike them,? the Master said, He whose heart is in the smallest degree set upon Goodness will dislike no one.
5Wealth and rank are what every man desires; but if they can only be retained to the detriment of the Way he professes, he must relinquish them. Poverty and obscurity are what every man detests; but if they can only be avoided to the detriment of the Way he professes, he must accept them. The gentleman who ever parts company with Goodness does not fulfill that name. Never for a moment does a gentleman quit the way of Goodness. He is never so harried but that he cleaves to this; never so tottering but that he cleaves to this.

The Lun Yu, the Analects of Confucius, should be in Everyman's Library.

There seems to be some confusion here by some of the Reviewers about this translation of the Lun Yu--the Analects of Confucius--of Kong Zi.
The Everyman's Library edition is the respected Arthur Waley translation from 1938. Look inside the book at the Copyright page provided by Amazon and there you will see that this is the Arthur Waley translation. Or you can go to the Everyman's Library website at Random House if you prefer.
For the money you can't beat this copy of the Analects. Hard Cover (Cloth) for the price of a paperback. There may be more easily read translations, but there is something to be said for having to stop and mull over what is being said where a book of wisdom is concerned. Stop and let intuition come to the fore. Let your heart listen to the heart as well as the mind of Confucius and his disciples.
If you only have one copy of the Analects, this is a very good one to have. The Analects are the sayings and quotes of the proverbial wisdom of Confucius and his followers. Literally "The Discussion Over Confucius' Words".
"When you have faults, do not fear to abandon them". Such words speak to my heart and my head.

Of profound historical importance

The Analects are the collected sayings attributed to Confucius and his disciples. They are aphorisms and anecdotes illustrating a code of living translated simply as the "Way." Adherents of the Way are to be honest, humble, respectful, and dutiful--these are all common-sense values. But gentlemen, according to Confucius, should also be rigorously observant of ritual traditions and seek ways to serve the State. This is quite a conservative philosophy, seeking to justify and preserve class divisions and upholding the power of the ruling elite.
Arthur Waley's translation dates from 1934. In the original introduction, Waley describes it as a scholarly translation, meaning he has sacrificed readability for accuracy. Many of the sayings are either incomprehensible or misleading without the aid of copious footnotes. Waley points out occasional ambiguities and variant interpreations, whereas a translator intent on readability might have simply imposed his own interpretation.
The teachings of Confucius had a profound impact on Chinese history, and it is within the context of the study of Chinese culture and history that reading The Analects has its greatest value.
