Ash Wednesday, by Ethan Hawke

From the actor and writer Ethan Hawke: a piercing novel of love, marriage, and renewal.

Jimmy is AWOL from the army, but-with characteristic fierceness and terror-he's about to embark on the biggest commitment of his life. Christy is pregnant with Jimmy's child, and she's determined to head home, with or without Jimmy, to face up to her past and prepare for the future. Somehow, barreling across America from Albany to New Orleans to Ohio and Texas in a souped-up Chevy Nova, Christy and Jimmy are transformed from passionate but conflicted lovers into a young family on a magnificent journey.

Ash Wednesday is a novel of blazing emotion and remarkable grace, a tale that captures the intensity-the excitement, fear, and joy-of being on the threshold of the mysterious country of marriage and parenthood. Powerful, assured, large of heart, and punctuated by moments of tremendous humor, it represents, for Hawke the novelist, a major leap forward.

From Publishers Weekly
Sure he can act (and direct), but can he write? Readers and critics remained undecided after the publication of Hawke's first novel, The Hottest State, but most will respond with an encouraging "yes" to his enjoyable second novel, which melds believable youthful introspection to a catchy road-novel plot. Jimmy Heartsock, AWOL from the army, and his pregnant girlfriend, Christy, are the young couple caught between love and disillusionment whose path to self-discovery is punctuated by passion ("This girl had a friggin' fireball for a heart") as well as endearing quirkiness. Jimmy is posted in Albany, N.Y., and waffling in his affections, when Christy gives him an ultimatum: she's going home to Texas and he can either come with her or forget about seeing her again. Taking the biggest gamble of his life, he decides to make the drive with her in his old Chevy Nova, risking dishonorable discharge. Christy, who is afraid to face who she is ("Good morning, fear.... You are my oldest friend") and only feels calm when she is moving, steps on her own path to self-renewal after meeting a blind man on a bus who speaks of change and the possibility of transcendence through God. The two protagonists must each learn to step out of themselves, find "gratitude in the face of loss or suffering" and submit to a love that is attuned to reality before they can find a home with and for each other. Hawke's text at times reads raw, but the novel's conversational tone, dual first-person narration and, above all, direct exploration of the simple truths of life and love make this a worthwhile tale and an honest one, sufficient to make most readers look forward to Hawke's next.

Hawke again departs from the silver screen to bring us this story of AWOL Jimmy and his pregnant girlfriend, who are heading home in a souped-up Chevy Nova to try to straighten out their lives.

From Booklist
This is the second novel (following Hottest State, 1996) by Hawke, the young actor who recently starred in Training Day. A quasi road novel, it features hotheaded, impulsive Staff Sergeant Jimmy Heartsock, who has gone AWOL from the army in order to chase down and propose to his pregnant girlfriend, Christy, with whom he had broken up some 15 hours earlier. Christy has hopped a bus heading for her home state of Texas; Jimmy catches up with her and agrees to take her home if she will marry him. As the two drive cross country in Jimmy's '69 Chevy Nova, they engage in an extended dialogue dissecting the genesis and evolution of their relationship and the struggle to accept the responsibilities of marriage and parenthood. Unfortunately, the novel consists almost entirely of dialogue and extended interior monologues that eventually blur into one voice. Thus we get opinions on everything from John Starks' basketball playing ("He was an artist. He played with feeling, like Mozart") to loneliness ("I was very concerned about loneliness when I was a little girl"). After a while, it begins to feel like one of those rambling, all-night conversations you had in college fueled by too much coffee, too many cigarettes, and a lot of bad fluorescent lighting. Hawke seems to be aiming for the eccentric, low-life ambience of a Barry Gifford novel, but this is definitely the lite version. Hats off to Hawke for putting himself out there, but it's his celebrity, not his prose, that will sell this one. REVWR

Story of "real" youthful self-discovery
By Wendy O.
At 29, Jimmy Heartsock doesn't think too much of himself. He longs to be someone he can admire. He had joined the Army on a whim after his father's suicide and hates it. But he didn't know what else to do at the time, looking for some order in his life. Christy, his 26-year-old girlfriend, is pregnant with his child. All she wants is to get to her hometown of Houston, a home she left behind 10 years ago. Together they embark on a rocky journey of self-discovery, an emotional road-trip from Albany to New Orleans to Texas in a souped-up `69 Chevy Nova. Although Jimmy thinks he's on official leave, the Army list him as AWOL. Jimmy and Christy contemplate their feelings and beliefs about love, marriage, parenthood and life. They're both still trying to figure out who they really are. Together they'll find out.
"Truly loving somebody else should never be confused with a good time. Loving somebody is just as painful and disappointing as it is getting to know yourself. It's probably the only thing worth doing, but that doesn't mean it's gonna be a picnic." - Jimmy Heartsock.
Actor, now writer, Ethan Hawke, shows us how many young people deal with self-worth and discovery of themselves, how the world is seen through their eyes. Very well-written in a dual first-person narration, Hawke's raw and honest writing style truly defines his characters' personas. I felt I knew them well and understood the uncertainties of their world and themselves. It was obvious to me which character was speaking, being so different from each other. The written dialogue was great: honest and real.

A Really Good Novel
By A Customer
Ash Wednesday, written by Ethan Hawke, is an amazing novel that captures the passion of love and marriage between a bright young couple. It's about a young sergeant in the military (James Heartsock) (a.k.a. Jimmy) and his beautiful pregnant girlfriend (Christy Walker) who travels from New York to Texas where Christy's family resides. Christy has decided to leave Albany and head home to Houston to prepare and settle for a new life with her future child regardless if Jimmy comes along on not. She gives Jimmy the chance to either come with her or stay behind with the military. Jimmy has to decide whether he prefers his position in the military or Christy who is pregnant. It's a time where he needs to make the biggest decision that could forever change his life. Finally, he makes the decision to choose his lover over his post, leaving the military behind. Everything was going really well until they got married in Ohio before reaching Texas. Shortly after their marriage, they encounter their most crucial time of life in New Orleans during their honeymoon in which they could lose their baby. The doctor tells them that the baby might be dead because the baby has no heartbeats, which should be quite clear at 20 weeks. Christy doesn't want to believe that the fact that her baby could be dead. Therefore they leave this hospital in search for a better hospital in Houston. On their way to Houston, a cop pulls them over for speeding and arrests Jimmy for AWOL from the military while Christy is taken to a hospital in Houston. In the end, Jimmy's actions result into a dishonorable discharge but fortunately Christy returns back to him with a smile on her face.
After reading only a few pages from Ash Wednesday, I became interested in Ethan Hawke's style of writing because it'll throw surprises that you'll definitely like. His fascinating style of language was what caught my attention in the first place. His words show how realistic people would talk and interact with each other. I would recommend this remarkable novel written by this author who is also an actor for it shows how it deals with the reality of life. The story carries one into another world that involves passion, sex, youth pregnancy, marriage, family, and the start of parenthood. Through this book, I have learned to a great extent of the values of family and love. If you're someone who loves to read about romance and family, you'll completely find Ash Wednesday a novel to remember.
