The Silent History: A Novel, by Eli Horowitz, Matthew Derby, Kevin Moffett

A generation of children forced to live without words.

It begins as a statistical oddity: a spike in children born with acute speech delays. Physically normal in every way, these children never speak and do not respond to speech; they don't learn to read, don't learn to write. As the number of cases grows to an epidemic level, theories spread. Maybe it's related to a popular antidepressant; maybe it's environmental. Or maybe these children have special skills all their own.

The Silent History unfolds in a series of brief testimonials from parents, teachers, friends, doctors, cult leaders, profiteers, and impostors (everyone except, of course, the children themselves), documenting the growth of the so-called silent community into an elusive, enigmatic force in itself―alluring to some, threatening to others. Both a bold storytelling experiment and a propulsive reading experience, Eli Horowitz, Matthew Derby, and Kevin Moffett's The Silent History is at once thrilling, timely, and timeless.

Wonderful, rare, intelligent science fiction.
By Reading in the Woods
Imagine being without words, having no language center for speech or comprehension, having no concept of the existence of language or names for things or self, having a blank space in a brain in which all other cerebral abilities function. The Silent History: A Novel is a fascinating account of what society does when a whole group of people, who will be called Silents, are born with this very condition.

Some people will say the Silents have a severe handicap, others say a gift. Most will simply treat Silents as undesirables, not really human, and definitely second class citizens. Parents will strive to teach their children to talk and as more and more silent children are born, support groups will form. Unsuccessful schools are built with teachers, not knowing how to reach the children, becoming either resigned and uncommitted or totally burnt out. Institutions are created with little benefit. Doctors and scientists attempt to find cures and compete for the honor of being named the one finding the cure. Useless and gimmicky products are manufactured to market to the families of the silent children. Government and private funding is given and withdrawn. The children grow into teenagers and young adults with new needs and desires and there is no progress towards integration.

This book will present questions that are difficult or perhaps impossible to answer.
What is it to be human?
What is true communication?
What is a disability?
When is it appropriate for the government dictate treatment?
How should time and resources be spent?
When does protest and prophecy become lunacy?

Written from the point of view of alternating characters, the story covers approximately 25 years. The SF plot stands alone but with the integration of ideas and Easter eggs of insight, this is one rare book.

I am an avid reading baby boomer and a great appreciator of well-done of science fiction. Oh for more books like this!

So unique and intriguing, just had to write a review (really rare event for me!)
By JustARegularReader
While the premise and scope of the story immediately interested me, I was hesitant to buy when I saw it at bookstore because of the writing format.... It appeared to consist of choppy brief chapters told in the first person by an assortment of people, and I couldn't imagine getting absorbed in any story written this way. So I passed on it, but the storyline stayed with me for a few days, so I finally downloaded sample to my kindle. Well, within 2 "choppy brief chapters" I was totally hooked. Instantly bought it and could hardly put it down.

Won't bother repeating synopsis here, but will say that it really didn't feel like science fiction to me--it actually was fairly realistic and feasible to me, and I am in a field related to some of the major plot points. I love stories about the near future and willing will suspend belief if a story is spun wonderfully, but am usually also the first to snort and find major plot holes within the universe created. This book was absolutely solid and all characters had great depth, even after the briefest time when first introduced and narrating their piece. It was amazing how the characters painted a very believable scenario, and how their stories intertwined and evolved without being predictable or hokey. Having the story unfolding from several people's point of view was brilliant and I can't imagine it being told Any other way. And it definitely was a story I did not want to end.

Other reasons I loved the book. It was long, in a really good way, but the chapters were short and so you could read in brief spurts when little time, or long bouts that you couldn't put down. It turned out to be ideal to read on the kindle because I could easily search my kindle and remind myself about the character and his/ her situation when they last were narrating a chapter (sometimes last heard from them many chapters earlier, and a few days since I last had time to read).

Just don't hesitate another minute. Read this book. This from someone who almost never writes reviews! I just loved it so much and it was refreshing.

The best book I've read in years!

Absolutely incredible book. It's influenced the way I look at and think about the world around me like no book has in a long time.

But it's also tight, readable, compelling, super enjoyable (science?) fiction.
